In this new Netflix romcom series, a young American marketer finds it hard to believe how lucky she is when she is transferred from Chicago to a marketing agency in the heart of Paris, France….

Paris, here I am!
Emily (Lilly Collins) is a typical girl from the American Midwest and admits at one point that she didn’t go to a European country before moving to Paris for work.
Needless to say, she is very excited to move to France.
And since setting foot in the French capital, Emily has been sharing every new experience with her disciples via her Instagram account, Emily in Paris…..
She immediately falls in love with the city and the French way of life. However, her new French colleagues are less than impressed when she shows up at the office in Paris unable to speak a word of French…..
But over time, Emily makes friends, like an American-Chinese girl she happens to meet on her lunch break. And of course, she also has luck in her romantic relationships with the French, especially with her French neighbor Gabriel…..
Honestly, I’ve been putting off the launch of the new Netflix series, which will be released in October 2020 with a few months…. will be released. It seemed so corny when I first looked at the pictures and trailer. And it’s very cheesy. But in the end, oddly enough, I still really liked it.

I couldn’t help but wonder: ….…
was a standard Carrie Bradshaw line. Carrie was the main character in one of my favorite TV shows: Sex and the City (1998-2004).
The television series, which takes place in New York, was created by the same creator as Emily in Paris. So there are some similarities, including Emily’s outfits.

But what I wondered, when I saw Emily in Paris, was: ….

I mean, seriously… So it’s either me or it’s fashionable these days. The show received high praise for Emily’s outfits. I guess it’s normal now to show up on your first day at a high-end marketing agency in Paris with a giant print of the Eiffel Tower on your shirt and a snake-print mini skirt…..

So, even if I’m not the biggest fan of Emily’s fashion preferences (they don’t get any better as the season progresses…), it’s the humor of the show that hooked me from the first episode. For example, there’s this conversation between two of Emily’s new colleagues: Paul and Sylvie. They’re both French:
Paul: Smoking is a pleasure, and who are we without pleasure?
Sylvie: German?
As a German, I have to admit that is true. Ha-ha.
Plus, Emily seems to really like floral prints, something we have in common. And it reflects a bit of his mood…. When she’s in a good mood, she wears something with a huge floral print. Whether it’s a soft winter coat or a yellow dress.
So it’s 2019 ……

Here’s another thing I found really striking about this series…. you can immediately tell it was shot in 2019!
It’s perfectly normal for a television series or feature film to hit theaters or streaming platforms a year before its release. We don’t usually think about it. I certainly haven’t seen anything in 2019 that was shot in 2018. But in 2020, as you all know, things have changed. So you’ll notice the difference.
Finally, in 2019 it was normal to walk from your Parisian apartment to the office you shared with your colleagues, from there to lunch with a friend, to an Instagram event with 20 other influential people, and finally to dance the night away at a crowded club. This is not the case in 2020….

With all the changes that have taken place this year, 2019 seems strangely longer than the whole year…..
It is suggested that there will be other seasons of Emily’s in Paris. I wonder how they are going to make it work with the existing restrictions. But I think Emily can definitely pass on some of those statements on the face mask!

Still, I think it’s time to launch a new series that will make us dream of the (still beautiful and romantic) capital of France. After all, it’s been almost 20 years since Amélie française (2001), played by Audrey Tautou, introduced us to her secret world between cosy cafes and artistic montages.
It’s been almost a decade since we took an American tourist (Owen Wilson) back in time every night at midnight in the romantic comedy Midnight in Paris (2011) on a journey to the 1920s.
Finally, Paris je t’aime (2006) showed us 18 different ways to fall in love in the city. Other Cities of Love followed the successful concept of combining several short love stories into one feature film. These include New York, I love you (2008) and Berlin, I love you (2019).
But back to Emily.

What’s great for film fans is that most of the filming took place in Paris, and since the locations are well known, we can find them ourselves….
Her small apartment, located on the top floor (as we learn in the first episode, a former cleaning lady), is pretty typical for a young expatriate professional like Emily. The location of this apartment is in the district of Place de l’Estrapade, on the 5th floor.
In one scene, Emily enters a bakery and tastes her first French pastry (divine bread covered in chocolate), which she immediately photographs and shares with her Insta fans. This bakery is located on the rue Fosse Saint-Jacques and is called Boulangerie Moderne.
When Emily’s boyfriend breaks up with her in America, she stands in front of the Pantheon, which is now a mausoleum built in the style of ancient Roman temples.
After all, the office of his Paris-based marketing company is located on the Place de Valois.

Paris, here we are!
Yes, Emily in Paris is indeed full of clichés, and the show remains superficial. But I must admit there was a lot of laughter, and sometimes laughter out loud.
Emily’s enthusiasm and positive outlook on life are perfectly demonstrated by Lilly Collins, who has shown in the past that she can master both serious roles (To the Bone, 2017) and mixed funny/serious roles (Love, Rosie, 2014).
Really, Lilly had fun filming the show in Paris. It has also been reported that Lilly recently got engaged and is apparently planning to return to Paris for her next wedding. I think it’s safe to say she must have liked it. ….
All in all, this series of light comedies is the perfect escape from the dark days of November 2020 and will have you dreaming of your next post-pandemic trip to Paris….
